The Yelm football team put forth its best effort of the season, falling just short on the road to Spanaway Lake 28-21 on Thursday, Oct. 22.

After Spanaway Lake took a 14-0 lead in the second quarter on two explosive touchdown plays, Yelm hurried back with a pair of touchdown passes by Zechariah Johnson to tie the game at 14-14. The Sentinels answered with a long touchdown run before halftime to take a 21-14 advantage, and they scored the lone touchdown of the third quarter to regain their 14-point lead.

Johnson tossed his third touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter, but the Tornados couldn’t inch any closer in the final minutes.

Johnson finished with three touchdowns and two interceptions on 17 of 30 passing with 132 yards. Yelm scored a season-best 21 points in the loss.

Yelm (0-8, 0-5 South Puget Sound League) will play a crossover game against Rogers (1-7, 0-5 SPSL) on Thursday, Oct. 29.
