The U.S. Forest Service is now accepting applications for more than 1,000 seasonal spring and summer jobs in Washington and Oregon, according to a news release last week.

Positions for the 2024 season are available in multiple fields, including fire, recreation, natural resources, timber, engineering, visitor services and archaeology, the release said, and “are a great way to gain valuable experience, work outdoors and get exposure to different careers.”

Applications must be turned in online by 8:59 p.m. on Nov. 8 at www.USAJOBS.gov.

Anyone interested is encouraged to apply early.

To apply, Forest Service employee-hopefuls must create an account, enter eligibility information and build or upload a resume, and browse job opportunities on the website using keywords. The website can sort jobs by topic, region and specific states.

“The mission of the Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations,” the release stated. “The agency manages 193 million acres of public land, aids state and private landowners, and maintains the largest forestry research organization in the world.”

The Pinchot Partners, a Gifford Pinchot National Forest-based collective nonprofit, in a Facebook post Friday, wrote the group would like to see “more hiring of locals. If you or someone you know would like a seasonal (spring/summer 2024) job, now is the time to act.”
