Olympia’s Lanese and Hennen, Yelm’s Andujar shine in Olympia XC Classic

Olympia High School cross country sophomore stars Quenton Lanese and Leah Hennen kicked off the season with first-place finishes in their respective classes at the Olympia XC Classic at LBA Park Saturday, Sept. 12.

Hennen earned her first career cross country first-place finish in the 2-mile sophomore race at 12 minutes and 21.3 seconds, six seconds faster than her teammate Gemma Stevick, who took second. Caitlin Lanese (sixth at 12:48.3) and Eliza Johnson (10th at 13:16.1) also collected top-10 times for Olympia in the girls sophomore race.

Quenton Lanese won the 2-mile race for sophomore boys at 9:50.8, about 40 seconds faster than anyone else. Olympia’s Quin Zola earned fourth in that race at 10:57.9, and teammate Tai Taylor took sixth at 11:20.3. Judah Beck of Olympia (ninth at 11:29.9) and Tyler Clark of Tumwater (10th at 11:30.4) rounded out the top 10. River Ridge’s Miles Liedtke finished 12th at 11:32.5.

Yelm senior Marcos Andujar was the other area champion, winning the senior boys 2-mile race at 10:18.7. Olympia’s Jack McDurmon finished in sixth place with a time of 10:36.6, and Yelm’s Peter Robbins took 10th at 10:46.6. 

In the freshmen 2-mile boys race, Yelm’s Anthony Abeyta finished fourth at 12:01.2, while Rochester’s Sawyer Ketter posted a fifth-place time of 12:11.5. Olympia freshman Paxton Price earned seventh at 12:14.2.

Olympia freshman Ava Bode was the area’s highest finisher in the 2-mile race for freshman girls at 14:42.2, and Rainier’s Rylee Wilson finished right behind her in 10th at 14:44.9. 



Rainier junior Komaire Robles, with a time of 13:40.4, earned eighth place in the 2-mile junior girls race, while teammate Alexis Myers took 11th at 13:58.2. 

Olympia’s Liam Doyle (10th at 11:01.1) and Sebastian Olson (14th at 11:11.1) were the only Thurston County runners to finish in the top 30 in the junior boys 2-mile race.

In other local cross country races, Capital traveled north to participate in the 27th Bellarmine Invite Saturday. 

The Cougars’ highest finisher was Isla Powell in the freshman girls 2-mile race, crossing the finish line in 15th place at 15:51.0. Weston Ridgeway was the top boys freshmen 2-mile race at 12:22.2 for a 30th-place run.

Freshman Emma Lamont took 58th in the 2-mile varsity girls race at 14:21.0, while senior Bella Lang (61st at 14:35.1) and junior Avey Garner (63rd at 14:36.9) were close behind. 

As a team, the Capital boys varsity squad finished fifth in points, led by senior Jae Walz with a time of 10:34.3 to finish 26th. Sophomore Quin Walz was 39th at 10:54.4, and junior Isaac Zwiefel (42nd at 11:00.2), junior Abram Montermini (45th at 11:02.9), senior Oliver Schrader (46th at 11:04.1), and junior Brad Crossen (49th at 11:07.7) also earned top-50 times.
