Letter to the Editor: Response to ‘The Roosevelts Would be Good Models for Politicians’

I always enjoy Dr. Richard Stride’s commentary in the Nisqually Valley News. Concerning Theodore Roosevelt, while the man had many good attributes, as related in the PBS hagiography and Dr. Stride’s piece, we must not overlook that the man was an avowed white supremacist, eugenics promoter, imperialist and believed war to be the highest achievement of western civilization. In particular, Roosevelt lobbied relentlessly for the Spanish-American War, which served no useful purpose for the American people and brought colonial subjugation to the innocent people of the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico. One wonders how well a man of Roosevelt’s temperament and outlook would be considered to be a role model for anyone today.
