Things are growing in Yelm thanks to Glorious Greenhouse Plant Shop and Vintage Interiors, a haven for plant enthusiasts and lovers of individualized home decor.
Business owner Melisa Visaya has seen her business flourish from a mobile plant trailer at farmers markets to a brick-and-mortar establishment.
“A couple of years ago, my daughter and I saw a mobile plant trailer at a farmers market and thought it was such a cool idea, so we decided to do our own,” Visaya said. “So in October of 2022, we opened our mobile plant shop.”
Initially, Visaya focused on night markets and weekend events. However, the overwhelming response from customers was that Visaya should get a permanent location.
“We had so many customers ask if we had a shop somewhere, the next obvious step was to open a brick and mortar,” Visaya said.
Despite having no formal plant training, Visaya, a painter by trade, has always loved greenery, which has been a hit with her customers.
Glorious Greenhouse is different from a typical plant shop. Visaya said the range of products offered includes houseplants — from easy care to rare varieties — and plant-care items, to terrarium-building kits, Wise Owl Paint, refinished furniture, Iron Orchid Designs craft items, crystals, plant-inspired jewelry and home decor. Among the favorites are oil diffusers from Walla Walla, crystals and the coveted Tradescantia Nanouks.
“My daughter and I do an inventory walks two or three days a week,” Visaya said. “We have local wholesale suppliers in Tacoma, Gig Harbor and Snohomish, as well as a good selection of wholesale outlets. We try to choose unique items that not everyone will have.”
For Visaya, the most enjoyable aspect of the business is the people who share the same passion for houseplants. The shop, she emphasizes, is a family endeavor, bringing her closer to her daughter and creating an environment where spending time together is a joy.
“We have received great feedback from the community,” Visaya said. “So many of our customers have said how happy they are to have a houseplant shop in Yelm. We strived to create a warm, welcoming environment, for which we have received lots of compliments.”
