City of Yelm Finance Earns Distinguished Award

Posted

City of Yelm has won the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association for the first time.

“The award reflects the commitment of the (City of Yelm) governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting,” said Joseph Wolfe,  financial director of City of Yelm, in an email.

To earn the award, a city’s budget presentation is evaluated by the Government Finance Officers Association — the city must score a “proficient” grade on each of four categories, including on the 14 “mandatory criteria” subcategories held within the four, Wolfe said.

More generally, the city satisfied nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation in order to receive the award, he said.

“These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device,” Wolfe said.

Since the award is good for one year, or during the current annual budget, City of Yelm will need to get ready for next year, which Wolfe indicated it is already doing.

“We believe our upcoming biennial budget will continue to meet the high standards of the program, and plan to submit it and subsequent budgets to (Government Finance Officers Association) in application of future awards,” he said.
