Family Storytime

Join the Yelm Timberland Library from 10:30 to 11 a.m. every Thursday for family storytime. The event includes music, movement, books and activities for the whole family. Children must be accompanied by a participating adult. The library is at 210 Prairie Park St. NE in Yelm.

Rainier Elementary Registration

The registration period for kindergartners for the 2023-24 school year at Rainier Elementary School is open. Children must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31, 2023. Parents and guardians can pre-register their future kindergartner online at www.rainier.wednet.edu/domain/60. Click on the registration link to complete the form. Staff from the school’s office will contact parents to confirm interest in the elementary program and review the registration process and paperwork. Friday, Sept. 1

Yelm Football at Camas

The Yelm Tornados football team kicks off its first game of the 2023-24 regular season in a non-conference matchup against the 4A Camas Papermakers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas.

Saturday, Sept. 2

Roy Rodeo

The Roy Rodeo returns on Sept. 2 and Sept. 3 at 8710 Higgins Greig Road in Roy. Gates for the event open at 12 p.m. and the rodeo starts at 1:30 p.m. Ticket sales are at the gate only. Children 5 and under can enter for free, while children 6 to 12 will pay $5 for tickets. Adults 13 to 60 will pay $13 at the gate, while adults 60 and older will pay $7.

Tenino Farmers Market

The Tenino Farmers Market, situated in Tenino’s downtown historic district on Olympia Street South, will host its annual Saturday market on Sept. 2. The farmers market features flowers, baskets, vegetable starts, baked goods, farm-fresh produce, USDA meats and more. The market takes place every Saturday through Sept. 30. The market sale on Sept. 30 will conclude the season during pumpkin day.

Yelm Farmers Market

The Yelm Farmers Market will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at a new location: in front of the Yelm Police Station on McKenzie Street.  The markets are scheduled every Saturday until Sept. 30.

Sunday, Sept. 3

Roy Rodeo

Bigelow House Museum Tour

The Bigelow House Museum offers regular escorted tours on the first and second Sunday of the month at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Entrance fees are $5 per adult, $4 for seniors and students, and $2 for children. The museum is located at 918 Glass Ave. NE in Olympia.

Yelm Girls Soccer Home Opener

Yelm High School’s girls soccer team will have its home opener against out-of-conference Spanaway Lake at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5.

South Pierce Fire and Rescue Public Hearing

South Pierce Fire & Rescue is set to hold its first public hearing on the 2024 proposed budget at a special board meeting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 129 Mashell Ave. N in Eatonville. The hearing will discuss the district’s revenue sources, levy and current expense budget pursuant to RCW 84.55.120.

Saturday, Sept. 9

Norse West Viking Festival



The annual Norse West Viking Festival is set for Saturday, Sept. 9 at Cochrane Park in Yelm. The event will feature local food vendors and a beer garden for “Vikings who are hungry and thirsty from plundering and pillaging.” There will also be dancing, tradesmen to teach different trades and local vendors.

Thursday, Sept. 14

Yelm Volleyball at Gig Harbor

Yelm High School’s first volleyball game of the season is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 14 at Gig Harbor High School. The contest is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. The game will be played at Yelm High School’s stadium.

Tuesday, Sept. 18

Yelm Volleyball Home Opener

The Yelm High School volleyball team is set for South Sound Conference action against Timberline High School on Sept. 18 in the team’s home opener. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m. inside the YHS gymnasium.

 

Saturday, Sept. 30

Dog Day of Summer

The City of Yelm’s Parks and Recreation department invites the public to bring their “furry best friend” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 30 at Yelm City Park  for the “Dog Day of Summer” event. The event allows dogs to cool off and enjoy the splash pad, while meeting other four-legged companions. All dogs must be leashed and under control at all times. There will be photo spots for owners to take photos with their animals.

Yelm High School Class of  1980 reunion

Yelm High School’s class of 1980 will reunite beginning at 5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 30, at Mr. Doug’s Restaurant in Yelm. The itinerary includes a 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. social cocktail hour, 6 p.m. dinner, and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. there will be a DJ, awards, a photo booth and more. RSVP for the event on Facebook or on Classmates. For people who don’t use either, event organizers have asked that they call or text Dana Couthran at 360-791-5833 to let her know. $10 will be collected at the door, from classmates only, to cover expenses.

2023 Mayor’s Cup Mario Kart Tournament

The City of Yelm is hosting the 2023 Mayor’s Cup Mario Kart 8 tournament beginning at 12 p.m. on Oct. 14 at the Yelm Community Center. Participants can register for the event at https://lf.yelmwa.gov/Forms/MayorsCup, and registration costs $20.

Spooky Cookies Decorating Workshop

The City of Yelm’s Parks and Recreations Department will host its Spooky Cookies Decorating Workshop from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Yelm Community Center, 301 Second St. SE. The class is for beginners or those who are curious about what decorating cookies is all about. Spooky Trail at Cochrane Park

The City of Yelm’s Parks and Recreation department will host a “Spooky Trail” at Cochrane Park from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 750 Mill Road SE. The park will transform into the “spookiest park in Yelm” for the event, and families are invited to walk the trail and see “spooky” elements added throughout the trail. Admission to the family-friendly event is free.

Saturday, Oct. 28

American Legion “Trunk-or-Treat”

Yelm’s American Legion Post No. 164 will host its third annual “Trunk-or-Treat” event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the post, which is located at 16733 103rd Ave. S. According to the group’s Facebook page, the American Legion implemented a nationwide Halloween safety program for young trick-or-treaters in 1972.
