In the team’s first game of two, the Yelm Tornados were able to clinch a fifth-inning lead on Tuesday against the North Thurston Rams at home to bring in the team’s second league win.
In the fifth, with Yelm down, 1-0, Logan Thomforde hit a ground ball, allowing Brady Bytheway to advance from second to home to tie it up off a third baseman’s error. With Thomforde advancing to third, the junior Yelm player was able to score on an error by North Thurston’s first baseman, bringing the Tornados over the Rams 2-1.
Junior Austin Schaler hit a ground ball and was able to reach first on an error by the Rams; sophomore Dylan Burnett was also able to complete a run from third. After Schaler stole second, Yelm senior Kodee Gifford singled out on a ground ball hard-center allowing Schaler to score and Yelm to expand their lead, 4-1.
Yelm senior Corbin Waite pitched all seven innings, throwing eight strikeouts, walking zero and allowing North Thurston to find contact with four hits. Junior Dylan Burnett went 2-for-3 on the plate, leading the Tornados in hits.
Results from the Tornados’ second series game against the Rams were not available by Wednesday presstime. Yelm will host Peninsula at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 15.
