During a Nov. 12 meeting, the Pierce County Council voted to approve a resolution indicating support for the Yelm Prairie Line Trail and the coalition working toward the trail’s completion.

The Yelm Prairie Line Trail would connect Roy and Yelm through 4.8 miles of trail. The trailhead for the trail would start in downtown Roy and connect up with the Yelm-Tenino Trail at the Centralia Canal.

“Tonight was a big step,” Roy Mayor Anthony McDaniel  said.

The City of Roy was recently awarded a $45,000 grant from the Puget Sound Regional Council, which will fund the planning expenses of the project.

Thanks to a matching fund by the Tacoma Washington Bike Club and Foothill Rails-to-Trails Coalition, there was zero cost to the City of Roy to acquire this first grant.

The project is expected to be an asset in connecting the two cities and could be beneficial for bicyclists during the annual Seattle to Portland event.
