Nicholas Manzanares, owner of Skyline Chiropractic, said he and his wife, Angela, both chiropractors, are aiming to build a family-like environment in their Christ-centered business, Skyline Chiropractic.
Skyline Chiropractic, located 1412 E. Yelm Ave. in the Creek Street Plaza, had its soft opening for February and began its first week of operations on Monday, Feb. 3. Manzanares said his business specializes in full spine, extremity adjusting and will soon be incorporating upper-cervical based care in the future.
Manzanares added one of the things he feels that sets Skyline Chiropractic apart is that it is a “fee-for-service” office. He said this means that Skyline Chiropractic is an out-of-network provider, and that it will provide invoices or itemized receipts for patrons to send to their insurance company for reimbursements.
“We get the question of why we operate that way. It’s a headache dealing with insurance companies, and the big thing that we want is actually quality care with the patients,” Manzanares said. “If we have to worry about insurance dictating the care, we don’t believe that we can function at our highest level to provide the care that we want to give. So it’s been a blessing, being able to operate in what we do and be in the light for other people.”
Manzanares described his business’s first week of operations as an overabundance, and said it was a blessing for he and his wife to hire their first employee to work with them.
“I believe that she’s a light at the front desk and we’ve all melded. We’re informed and have communicated effectively,” Manzanares said. “Prayer has been really big, and I just feel like we’ve just had our cup really runneth over as far as our first week of operations with doing a soft opening for the month of February.”
He added that Skyline Chiropractic has seen several walk-ins during its initial week and that several of them were attending the previous chiropractic establishment prior to Skyline Chiropractic opening. Manzanares is thankful to see several good reviews begin to flow in — despite not advertising reviews for his business anywhere.
“We don’t have any QR codes or any text messages that are currently going out for the reviews right now and we’ve already had, without even asking, four people that have left reviews for us that have just been raving about how great the care was and that’s just cause we’re paying attention. We’re detailed and caring,” Manzanares said. “I think people recognize that, and it’s a new space so it feels nice. It smells like a new car and a pair of shoes that you get.”
Manzanares said that the staff at Skyline Chiropractic will pray during Monday morning meetings. The prayer often includes what’s going on in their personal lives, and what they can bring to the business realm.
“It’s never just one fortitude of something that’s going on that you can separate. So I tell people that you can’t separate the things you ingest that can be physically, mentally, spiritually from what you listen to, to what you’re eating and then what you’re viewing,” Manzanares said. “So it’s really a trifecta as far as the battle that you go through, but on a daily basis, there’s temptations of the world that can be going on. Sometimes, it’s hard for everyone, as far as staff and people outside of here, so we try to pray for resilience. We try to pray for abundance. We all have personal lives outside of this business and we want things to go well for people’s personal lives as well.”
Manzanares and his wife, Angela, met in chiropractic school later on in life. He said they always knew that they wanted to open up a chiropractic practice — even when they first began to date prior to marriage. Before opening Skyline Chiropractic, the two agreed to gain experience and see where their journey took them. After moves from Florida to Ohio, and Ohio to Washington, the couple eventually settled their roots in Washington.
“We formulated ideas, we had imagination, we even had a different logo and brand that we created while we were in chiropractic school. We both knew that it just wasn’t the right time. You learn a certain amount in chiropractic school that’s geared towards science-based musculoskeletal conditions, but you learn minimal to nothing as far as business,” Manzanares said. “So we’ve seen everything from southeast to Midwest to now the west side of the United States as far as different practitioners, different offices, different payment styles, different technique styles. We feel like we have the best blend together of providing quality care, taking our time with patients, but also what works.”
Prior to beginning his work in the Yelm community, Manzanares said he’d practiced in University Place and in Federal Way at Joint Chiropractic — the largest chiropractic franchise in the United States with nearly 1,000 clinics nationwide. He said he worked there for a year with high volume and low cost of entry.
“I was getting burnt out with chiropractic care and I said, ‘there’s gotta be something more.’ I had to do private practice back in Ohio and I said, ‘I’m comfortable with that. I like engaging with people that way, not having to be high volume.’ So then I was introduced to a really great group of chiropractors that has a five clinic location and that was in Spanaway,” Manzanares said.
”I worked there for a year, and allocated my skills with motor vehicle accident patients and other different types of conditions that were a little bit more than just wellness-based.”
Being from a small town in Florida, Manzanares wasn’t a fan of how quickly and largely the community surrounding Canyon Road was being developed. He and Angela wanted to remain close to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, as she’s a veteran and the two shop at the PX and Commissary.
“We drove through Yelm, and we said, ‘man, this is that small town field that we want,’” Manzanares said. “People are smiling. People are waving at other people who are in the woods, and it’s five minutes into the town and five minutes out. We really like the feel of that.”
