A Yelm woman allegedly addicted to meth gave birth to baby at home to avoid alerting Child Protection Services to the baby’s birth.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from CPS Aug. 13 at 6:47 a.m. that a 31-year-old woman may have given birth at her home “without required medical care in an attempt to keep CPS from taking her baby into protective custody,” according to a press release from the sheriff's department.

The woman lives in the 16000 block of 83rd Way S.E. in Yelm.

According to the release, CPS informed the sheriff’s office it was involved because the woman allegedly tested positive for methamphetamines while pregnant.

A deputy contacted the woman at her residence and she claimed she had not yet had her baby, according to the release. When asked, the woman reportedly refused to allow him to enter her house to verify the baby had not been born.

The deputy obtained a search warrant to enter the residence. Upon entering the house, he discovered a newborn baby girl and evidence that confirmed the woman gave birth to the baby there, according to the release.

After further investigation, the sheriff’s office discovered a friend of the woman, who is a certified nursing assistant and had no formal training in neonatal or pediatric nursing, assisted in the birth, according to the release. The friend reportedly watched a YouTube video to learn how to cut the baby’s umbilical cord.

According to the release, authorities believe the baby was born on Aug. 11 or 12.

The baby was transported by ambulance to St. Peter Hospital in Olympia for urgent medical care. As of Aug. 16, the baby is reported to be in stable condition, according to the release.

The baby has been placed in protective custody with CPS and an investigation into charges is ongoing, according to the release.
