A Yelm man was arrested for assault Thursday after he allegedly assaulted his pregnant girlfriend. The woman reportedly learned later that her unborn child had died.
At about 7:17 p.m. Thursday, deputies responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 12300 block of Zeller Road Southeast.
Deputies reportedly heard arguing when they arrived and made contact with a man and woman in the residence.
The man — Mark Mason, 53, of Yelm — reportedly said the argument began because his girlfriend was pregnant and using drugs. His girlfriend was six months pregnant, he reportedly said, and both he and his girlfriend began drinking after learning about “complications related to the pregnancy.”
The sheriff’s office is investigating the death of the unborn child to determine if its death stemmed from the assault or from unrelated complications.
Mason reportedly said the woman had hit him in the head with a frying pan during the argument.
The woman reportedly confirmed the couple was arguing and said Mason strangled her during the argument, and punched and kicked her.
She reportedly said Mason threatened to kill her while strangling her, and told deputies she grabbed a frying pan and struck him to defend herself. Mason reportedly threw her to the ground, and then reportedly kicked her in the stomach.
The woman later learned at the hospital her unborn child had died, according to the news release.
Mason was arrested on charges of second-degree domestic violence assault and felony domestic violence harassment.
If the investigation finds the alleged assault caused the child’s death, Mason will be charged with first-degree manslaughter, said Sgt. Ray Brady of the sheriff’s office.
