Yelm Lions Club Brings Back ‘Movie Nights in the Park’

Get ready for a summer filled with outdoor entertainment and treats as the Yelm Lions Club announced the revival of its beloved Movie Nights in the Park event. The community can enjoy free movie screenings and a dining experience starting on Saturday, July 1.

At Longmire Park, the first movie that will be shown is Beethoven. On July 15, the Call of the Wild will be featured, followed by Jungle Cruise on July 29, Up on Aug. 12, and Ratatouille on Aug. 26.

“Over the years, attendance grew steadily, and it’s not uncommon to see a couple hundred people enjoying the movie screenings,” said Christy Garcia, one of the event’s co-chairs. “A lot of work goes into organizing the event. We have a planning committee that starts months in advance to determine the schedule and movie selection, ensuring we have the necessary licensing and permissions.”

The event, now in its eighth year, originated in 2015 when the Young Lions and Yelm Lions Club hosted a cost-free activity for families to spend quality time together. Movies in the Park quickly gained popularity as an enjoyable and accessible event.

However, the first year’s trial run at Yelm City Park proved challenging due to traffic and lighting issues, so organizers moved the event to Longmire Park, a spacious venue with ample parking, thanks to the contribution of a larger movie screen by the Nisqually Indian Tribe.

The Yelm Lions Club also raises funds for movie licensing, as each film requires a fee. Garcia said setting up the equipment and coordinating volunteers for concession stands, and vendors add to the logistical challenges.

“There is also tear down after the movie, making sure you have the right vehicle for equipment and finding storage for the equipment,” Garcia said.

Despite occasional setbacks caused by inclement weather, the community cherishes the Movie Nights in the Park experience. Cancellations due to rain or extreme temperatures can disappoint attendees, so Garcia emphasized the importance of keeping a close eye on the weather forecast.

The event adopts a picnic-style atmosphere as attendees bring their lawn chairs and blankets to set up in their preferred spots on the baseball fields. The communal spirit and sense of togetherness make the experience even more enjoyable.

“We’ve had a lot of people come back that have been to previous Movie Nights in the Park,” Garcia said.

This year, there will be a concession stand that will offer hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and soda.

Community members can donate funds through various means to support the event and to contribute to the Yelm Lions Club’s charitable initiatives. Local businesses have the opportunity to display their logos on the screen for a small advertising fee.

The Lions Club has also partnered with local organizations, like Living Water Church, which donated a storage unit to store the event’s equipment. Additionally, collaboration with the Boy Scout Troop 28 and volunteers from the Outpost Church ensures smooth setup and tear-down of events.

“We are grateful for the community’s support and welcome anyone interested in volunteering or learning more about our club,” Garcia said. “The proceeds from the concession stands directly benefit the community, enabling us to provide free eyeglasses and exams, as well as support our annual Christmas store. Every Christmas, children can select a gift for their parents, while enjoying a complimentary pancake breakfast.”

Garcia said the event promises delightful evenings under the stars, while people enjoy classic films and a dinner experience while supporting the Yelm Lions Club’s commitment to the community’s welfare.
