Yelm Community Schools to Host Second STEMKAMP This Summer

Posted

Yelm Community Schools has announced it will host its second STEMKAMP this summer where students can receive hands-on training in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in a day-camp atmosphere.

In partnership with Goshen Education Consulting, the day camp will run from Aug. 8 to Aug. 12 and has capacity for about 125 students.

STEMKAMP is specifically designed for — as the KAMP acronym suggests — Kids of Active Military Personnel. It offers participating students in grades 3 to 8 “fun, hands-on, immersive activities designed to help them explore a wide range of STEM-related careers,” according to a news release.

This year’s theme will be “New Frontiers in Space,” where students will explore what life on another planet might look like.

Yelm is one of only 10 districts nationwide to participate in STEMKAMP, which is funded by a U.S. Department of Defense grant given to Goshen Education Consulting.

“As the largest employer of scientists and engineers in the world, the Department of Defense recognizes the importance of inspiring students to become STEM professionals,” the release stated.

Yelm was selected by Goshen due to its connection with families employed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

The program was created based on research data that suggests students with a declared early interest in the STEM fields are up to three times more likely to graduate from college with a STEM degree, according to the release.

“Last year, 88% of Yelm parents agreed that STEMKAMP made their child feel more confident learning STEM disciplines,” said Shannon McWhorter, STEMKAMP program director. “We love seeing the students’ excitement for STEM grow each day of camp. STEMKAMP really is igniting a passion for STEM in our students.”
