During a Yelm Community Schools Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, Sept. 10, YCS Superintendent Chris Woods provided an update on the investigation of Yelm High School’s head football coach, Tutu Tamaalevea — who was placed on administrative leave on Monday, Aug. 31.

The coach was placed on administrative leave last month after an “isolated incident” was reported to administrative staff.
During the meeting, Woods told attendees that he wanted to read the letter that went out to football families during the afternoon of Thursday, Sept. 10. He noted this is the third update, and that he believes it captures where YCS has been and where it’s going.

“Clear Risk Solutions has concluded the on-site interviews,” Woods read on Thursday, Sept. 10. “The investigator has also received written statements, videos, images and other information gathered during the investigation. The investigator will now review and analyze the available information and evidence, and prepare a written report for Yelm Community Schools. We anticipate this portion of the process will take approximately two to three weeks.”

Woods added, if the investigation requires additional time beyond the anticipated timeframe, YCS will provide families with another update. He said YCS will continue to follow the appropriate processes and carefully consider the information provided throughout the investigation before any final determinations or decisions are made.

“To protect the privacy and confidentiality of students and staff, we will not share any specific information regarding individuals involved in this investigation,” Woods read. “We recognize that investigations of this nature can be difficult and families may have questions or concerns. We appreciate your continued patience and understanding as we allow the process to proceed thoroughly and appropriately.”

The superintendent added that the responsibility of YCS is to carefully review the information provided and take appropriate action based on the facts and applicable district policy and procedures. He also thanked football families for their patience, understanding and continued support of YHS students and the Tornados football team.

Woods said he will keep families updated.

Additionally, considering that it’s the beginning of the school year, the superintendent claimed that investigators don’t have a lot on their plate at the moment. He noted that DeeDee Buckingham, YCS director of human resources, has been in contact with investigators. He’s hopeful that the district will get an answer in a timely manner.

“I think what’s really important here is, from a district standpoint, we want to make the decision that is best for students, best for staff, for our community, following policies and procedures,” Woods said.

Additionally, it was announced on Wednesday, Sept. 16, on the Instagram page titled “wa_islandsbest” that Tamaalevea has been named the head coach of the Islands Best 14U boys football team.
