When the Tenino High School girls soccer team beat Elma 7-0 in Tenino on Sept. 30, it was the first time the core group had beaten the Eagles. The Beavers had previously lost eight in a row to Elma dating back to 2021.
Now, the Beavers have shut out Elma twice in a 16-day span, including most recently with a 1-0 victory in Elma Thursday night. Kyla Watson’s 30th-minute goal off an assist from Maria Summers was enough to give Tenino the win, and the defense, led by junior keeper Gracie Sweet, held strong.
Tenino outshot Elma 16-2 Thursday, a similar margin to the 20-2 outshooting in the Evergreen rivals’ previous meeting on Sept. 30. While the shots didn’t find the net Thursday, Tenino co-head coaches Trevor Fetbrandt and Dave Montgomery were pleased with their overall effort.
“We looked like a great, complete team tonight and had tons of energy and pressure. We executed a lot of the things that we talk about on a regular basis,” Fetbrandt said. “Although we beat them by a significantly larger margin last time, I think our team effort and execution on the whole was actually better today than when we played them at home.”
The coaches gave shoutouts to freshman Charley Jones, along with the entire front line for their constant pressure against the Eagles.
Tenino (9-3-2, 4-2 Evergreen) sits in second place in the league behind Montesano with two regular season matches to go. The Beavers will head to Hoquiam to face the last-place Grizzlies on Oct. 21 before the regular season finale at home against Rochester on Oct. 23.
