U.S. Rep. Heck Needs to Protect Safety Nets for the Poor

Posted

It is very important for our representatives in Congress to battle any attempt to cut safety net programs that feed the hungry, provide access to health care, and help the working poor make ends meet (in reference to the letter to the editor “Rep. Heck Needs to Support Medicaid and Food Stamps” by Coco Chang, Nisqually Valley News, Jan. 4, 2018).

Fortunately, Congressman Denny Heck, D-Washington, has a history of doing just that. Let’s ask him to continue to reach across the aisle to help members of the majority party understand how important this is: one in five children live in poverty.

Surely no one in Congress wants to take food from children, but that is exactly what cutting these programs would do. We can support Congressman Heck with our calls and letters to protect these programs. And going one step farther, how about doing what it takes to end hunger and poverty in the world’s richest country?
