A two-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 north of Grand Mound resulted in one car flipping onto its top and the other catching fire at about 11:45 p.m. Sept. 20.

According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol, both vehicles were traveling south on I-5 in the same lane when the tailing vehicle, a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, struck the rear of a 2018 Subaru Forester. Both vehicles then left the right side of the roadway. The Forester rolled and landed on its top, while the Malibu broke out in flames and became fully engulfed.

Eduardo Bonilla Gonzalez, 41, of Winslow, and the driver of the Malibu, was charged with driving under the influence and vehicular assault. He was uninjured in the collision.

Brandon M. Jack, 37, of Portland, Oregon, and the driver of the Forester, was uninjured as well, as was one of his passengers, Wesley E. Worrells IV, 40, also of Portland. Both were wearing seatbelts. A third passenger, Amanda K. Duncan, 40, of Milwaukie, Oregon, was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt. She was transported to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.

According to the state patrol, the interstate was blocked for roughly 45 minutes after the collision. Both vehicles were totaled.

The cause of the accident was officially listed as “under investigation.”
