Tenino bags seven in win over Ilwaco

The Tenino girls soccer team got the only goal it would end up needing in the opening 60 seconds of its non-league matchup against Ilwaco on Saturday morning, then added six more for good measure over the next 79 minutes for a 7-0 win.

“We were doing a lot of really good stuff, getting a lot of shots,” Tenino coach Dave Montgomery said.

To be more specific, the Beavers (7-4-1, 1-2 1A Evergreen) snapped off 32 shots in total, and for every goal they scored, they struck iron, hitting the post six times and crossbar once.

That — along with a huge day for Ilwaco goalkeeper Julie Perez, who finished with 14 saves — helped the Fishermen keep the deficit at just one for a half-hour, after Abagail Archibald opened the scoring in the first minute off an assist from Kyla Watson.

Put in the 32nd, Tenino won a penalty kick, Kyra Dirks slotted it home and the dam burst.

Freshman Callie Mickelson made it 3-0 a shade before halftime, stealing the ball off a defender and burying it in the back of the net.

Out of the break, Mickelson needed just 22 minutes to complete her hat trick with two more goals. She’s now at 17 for the fall, just three off of the Tenino freshman record with five games remaining in the regular season.

Keeping possession all morning against an overmatched 2B side, the Beavers got to focus on a few different movements and sets, with Dirks and Holly Thoren partnering at opposite wing backs and getting upfield to join the attack.

Watson scored in the 66th off an assist from Dirks. With 10 minutes to go, Montgomery let starting goalkeeper Dakota Lees sub into the outfield, and she bullied her way for a goal of her own in the 76th minute to make it 7-0.

“She basically willed herself to go get a goal,” Montgomery said. “That was pretty cool to watch.”

Tenino will return to league play with a crucial Evergreen matchup against Eatonville at home on Tuesday.
