Stolen Vehicle Recovered in Yelm

Yelm police officers observed somebody driving a truck on Canal Road as the vehicle dragged metal underneath it and caused sparks at 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

The car had no front or back license plates, stated a police report.

Officers turned their lights on and attempted to pull the man over.

Because of new laws passed by the state Legislature last session, officers were not allowed to pursue the man, stated the report, but he eventually pulled over as officers caught up to him.

Immediately after the man pulled over, he stepped out of his car.

After checking the VIN number, law enforcement recognized the vehicle as stolen.

Officers arrested the man for eluding law enforcement and for possession of a stolen vehicle.

Assault Reported in Yelm

Police officers were dispatched to a home in Yelm to de-escalate an argument between a man and his wife at around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5.

Upon arrival, officers learned the argument had started as the two were discussing who would make dinner that night.

The situation reportedly escalated when the husband tried to remove himself from the situation. The woman pulled a knife on him, although she didn’t threaten the man with it, stated a police report.

The man told officers he was afraid because his wife had previously thrown a boiling pot of water on him.

The man claimed to have pushed the woman away from him with an open hand in the chest area after he felt threatened, which caused the woman to fall over a bar stool, stated the report.

After a discussion with the other police officer, it was determined the man was the primary aggressor, stated the report. He was arrested on charges of assault in the fourth-degree, and malicious mischief in the third-degree.

Yelm Church Broken Into

Police officers responded to a call around 12 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6 after an Alcoholics Anonymous representative called and stated the Saint Columban Catholic Church where their meetings took place had been broken into.

The man stated that upon arrival to the church, he noticed the door had been forcibly opened after the building was secured the night prior, stated a police report.

Police officers weren’t able to find any external damage to the door, but noticed the kick board of the door had been broken.

No suspect information was immediately available.

Shoplifting Takes Place at Rite-Aid

Yelm police officers responded to a call shortly before 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7 after they received reports of a theft at the Rite-Aid located on Yelm Avenue.

Officers received a description of the man and were able to locate the suspect who was later identified by the reporting party.

As officers were en route, the man fled the scene and wasn’t detained. His whereabouts were unknown.

The man reportedly stole items with an estimated value of over $850, which have since been recovered, stated the report.

Hit-and-Run Occurs at Yelm Safeway

Police officers were dispatched to the parking lot at Safeway after a Yelm citizen called and reported his car had been backed into and dented.

The man noted his car was not damaged upon arriving at work.

The reporting party told officers he would like to charge the person with a hit-and-run if the suspect is located. 

The vehicle damaged was a 2014 Kia Soul. The incident took place at around 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8.
