The Shiplap Shop and Coffee House in Yelm recently received a facelift and an expansion.

On Sunday, April 9, the business opened its doors for the first time since the renovations.

Gary Rurup, with Shiplap Shop and Coffee House, presented some of the new features at the store by going live on their Facebook page. The changes include easier accessibility for individuals in wheelchairs or mothers with strollers, as well as more seating availability.

The expansion also moved the store’s front entrance, which now faces Yelm Avenue.

Rurup said previously people would enter the store from Second Street. He noted people can still park there, but should head to the front of the building to its new entrance.

Rurup said the primary purpose for the expansion was to provide customers with more room and space to shop, and more seating options so people can enjoy their coffee and visit with their friends. There’s now window seating available at the front of the shop near the entrance.

The business brought back an indoor, decorative fireplace for customers to enjoy. Rurup said while it doesn’t have real flames, it allows customers to enjoy the “ambiance” of a fireplace. There is also seating available near the fireplace along with several tables and an eight seat “community table” for larger groups to utilize.

Shiplap Shop and Coffee House plans to eventually rent out its conference room, which can seat 14 to 16 people. Rurup said the room could be rented our for events like meetings, baby showers and bridal showers. He added details on the rental of the room are still being ironed out.

Rurup described the new look of the business as “bright” and “airy.”

“We felt the pinch of the economy like most small businesses, but we haven’t given up. We’re moving forward in a big way,” Rurup said on Facebook Live. “We want you to feel welcome and know that your children are welcome. We’ll continue to take customer input to make this be a place where you can’t wait to come get a cup of coffee.”

Shiplap Shop and Coffee House still offers a large variety of coffee, tea and energy drinks. They also sell doughnuts, pastries and other food items.

As people grab a drink or something to eat, they can also wander the store to purchase things like puzzles, mugs, freeze dried candy, chocolates, candles, stickers and wall decor. The shop also has a selection of local flowers available for purchase.

For customers that like to do things themselves, Shiplap Shop and Coffee House also has a “DIY Corner” where customers can purchase things to make at home.

The business is located at 112 Yelm Ave. E. It is open from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, and from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, they’re open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
