The CT Publishing Editorial Board enthusiastically endorses Peter Abbarno for re-election to represent Washington’s 20th Legislative District. As an experienced legislator with deep ties to the community, Peter has proven himself to be an effective advocate for the people of the 20th District, which now extends from south Thurston County to the city of Vancouver in Clark County.

Peter’s work reflects a commitment to pragmatic solutions and meaningful community investments, making him the clear choice for continued leadership in Olympia.

Peter’s leadership as the ranking member of the House Capital Budget Committee highlights his ability to secure critical funding for projects that benefit both his district and the state. Peter is one of four legislators in Olympia that negotiates the $11 billion biennial state capital budget that provides much-needed investments in K-12 education, behavioral health services and affordable housing. Locally, Peter ensured funding to mitigate catastrophic flooding and habitat restoration in the Chehalis Basin, address childcare and early learning deserts, provide quality of life opportunities through access to sports and parks, and invest in necessary sewer, water and broadband infrastructure.

Peter also serves on two very important and policy intensive House committees: the House Environment and Energy Committee and the Civil Rights and Judiciary Committee. Peter’s committee positions have him discussing and voting on issues like the Climate Commitment Act, energy policy, as well as constitutional issues. These committees address policies that impact every person and business in Washington state, and we are lucky to have someone as capable as Peter looking out for our best interests.

As a former Centralia City Council member, Peter understands how statewide policy impacts local communities. Public safety is a priority for Peter, who has fought for policies that increase the number of law enforcement officers on the streets, as well as restore law enforcement’s ability to protect all of us. His advocacy for reinstating police pursuit authority demonstrates his dedication to reducing crime and ensuring that communities feel secure. Peter has also taken a balanced approach to addressing drug decriminalization issues following the Blake decision. As one of the negotiators of the “Blake Fix,” he emphasized accountability measures and improved access to treatment and recovery programs. His work reflects a common-sense approach that prioritizes both public safety and compassionate solutions for those in need.

Peter’s local roots run deep. As a former Centralia City Council member, a practicing attorney and an active volunteer, Peter has consistently demonstrated his commitment to improving the lives of those in his community. His wife, Holly, is a public school teacher, and their two school-age children further connect him to the challenges faced by working families and the education system. This personal investment drives his advocacy for education reforms and ensures that he remains in touch with the concerns of his constituents.

Throughout his time in the Legislature, Peter has been a vocal proponent of fiscal responsibility. In our discussions with Peter, he emphasizes that legislators are “stewards of public funds.” He continues to oppose excessive government spending and advocates for meaningful tax relief. His ability to work across the aisle and find practical solutions reflects the kind of steady, reliable leadership that our state needs.

At a time of polarizing partisanship in both Washingtons, Peter’s pragmatic approach and communication style is refreshing. He understands what it takes to get things done for his constituents. It is clear Peter is a leader in Olympia, and he has a trusted voice on both sides of the aisle.

Abbarno’s track record of public service, his dedication to the district and his focus on results make him the right choice to continue representing the 20th District. Let’s keep this momentum going: Reelect Peter Abbarno to the Washington state House of Representatives. His proven leadership will ensure a prosperous future for our community and the state.
