Mountaineers Pull Away from Wolves

The Rainier girls basketball team earned a non-league win to open up its week Monday, downing Black Hills handily, 72-41.

The Mountaineers led by two points after a quarter of play, but left their guests in the dust in the second quarter, going on a 22-5 run to go into halftime up by 19, and stretched it to 31 by the end of the third.

Angelica Askey had 20 points to lead the Mountaineers, and also finished with three steals and three assists. Brooklynn Swenson put in 19 points and five steals, while Bryn Beckman had 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Haleigh Hanson came a board and two points shy of a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.

Sophomore Kiley McMahon put up 18 points for the Wolves, 10 of which came from the free-throw line. Amanda Aybar and Kayla Patti both had seven points.

Rainier (4-1, 1-1 C2BL) is set to return to league play Wednesday, at home against Onalaska. Black Hills (1-3, 0-1 2A EvCo) will take on Shelton on Tuesday.
