At the annual Rainier Duals last weekend, the Rainier wrestling team finished third among a field of Montesano, Kelso, Seattle Academy, Chief Leschi, and Forks.
Forks went 4-0 to take home championship honors, and Montesano won a tiebreaker with the Mountaineers to take second.
Each team had four duals, and Rainier went 3-1, with one loss to the 1A Bulldogs in a close 42-40 dual. The Mountaineers started with a 54-0 win over Chief Leschi, before the close defeat at the hands of Montesano. Then Rainier got victories over Seattle Academy, 54-18, and Kelso, 46-30.
Freshmen Dorien Cano (170) and Jayden Alagarbes (120) each went 4-0 as well as Conner Mounts (126) and Zander Peck (160). Rainier coach Chris Holterman also praised Addison Pooole (126) and Rudy Garcia (182) for stepping up as newcomers and wrestling well.
The girls also hosted a tournament, and finished third out of 10 total teams. Puyallup won the overall title with a score of 98.5, followed by Forks; 89. Rainier finished with an 88.
Leading the way for Rainier was senior Kira Medlock (130), junior Katherine Kinahan (190) and freshman Kiera Anderson (170), who all won their weight class. Junior Emma Desotell (110) finished third in her class and freshman Maddie Mounts (125) placed second in her first competition of the season.
