Mountaineers Fall to State Consolation Semifinals

SPOKANE — Struggling to get its footing against No. 1 Colfax and sophomore Brynn McGaughy, the No. 7 Rainier girls basketball team fell Thursday in the 2B state quarterfinals at Spokane Arena, 67-29.

McGaughy scored a game-high 34 points, mostly in the game’s first three quarters, as the Bulldogs ran out to a big lead and never looked back in the win.

The Mountaineers struggled to string together stops, and then struggled to score when they got behind. Angelica Askey was the lone Mountaineer in double figures with 10 points. Rainier shot 31% from the field and were outrebounded, 35-21.

Rainier will hope to bounce back in a loser-out consolation semifinal against No. 6 La Conner at 12:15 p.m. Friday at Spokane Arena.
