Following a four-game cold spell in mid-December, the Rainier Mountaineers boys basketball team is finding its offensive groove again. Rainier earned its third consecutive win with a 73-29 trouncing of Winlock at home Friday night.

The Mountaineers pulled in front early, leading by 14 after one and 23 at halftime. Their defense held an opponent to under 30 points for the second time this season, as Winlock failed to surpass more than eight points in any quarter.

Peyton Sheaffer’s 17 points were a game-high, Nehemiah Linson provided 13 points, and Jordan Pringle tallied nine. Rainier got a lift from its freshmen and newcomers, as five players — Ty Beckman, Ryder Martin, Devin Sheaffer, Noah Terry and James Morrison — contributed a combined 27 points.

Winlock was led by Arean Thapa’s 11 points, while Sam Hunt added seven. Freddy Patching tacked on four, Julien Auve put up three, and Carter Svenson and Monte Williams each had two.

Rainier (6-4, 4-2 Central 2B League) will visit Toledo (4-2, 3-0 C2BL) next Tuesday night and then Onalaska (2-5, 2-4 C2BL) on Thursday.

Winlock (2-7, 1-5 C2BL) has now lost four straight and hosts Napavine (6-0, 4-0 C2BL) next Tuesday night.
