Missing Hiker at Mount St. Helens Found Dead

Posted

A hiker who was reported missing earlier this week at Mount St. Helens has been found dead.

On Wednesday at about 1:50 p.m, hikers in the Mt. Whittier area called Cowlitz County 911 to report they had found an unresponsive person on a ridge below them.

Cowlitz Search and Rescue staff responded to the area and confirmed the person, who they identified as Brian Yang, was dead. Yang appeared to have fallen about 200 feet down a steep embankment, stated a news release from the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office.

Before he was discovered, Yang, 25, was last seen at about noon on Sunday at the Coldwater Trailhead.

Yang was a first lieutenant at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. About 130 JBLM service members had joined the search for Yang, alongside Cowlitz County Search and Rescue.

Because of the large scale of the operation, the release stated agencies will be on scene for several more hours as searchers return to the command post.
