Sarah Gong, fifth grade, and Serenity Sivich, kindergarten, each raised more than $200 from family and friends as sponsors in the seventh annual 2017-18 Mill Pond Pentathlon fundraiser. The girls were guest physical education teachers for the day this week.
Mill Pond Elementary raised more than $4,500 in total. The pentathlon was held Oct. 10. Various grade levels competed in 90 minutes of fitness including dance, frisbee or ball accuracy challenge, jump rope, team relay and tug of war, said Yelm Community Schools Office Professional IV Tami Connally.
The girls helped PE teachers Steve Rothwell and Dan Nelson with that day’s activity. On Monday around noon, for example, Sarah and Serenity chose some third-grade students for a game of dodgeball. They helped put balls on a line as the two teams waited on opposite ends of the floor. If a kid was hit with a ball they were out of the contest, but if they caught a thrown ball then the classmate who tossed said ball was eliminated. They aimed throws at toes, not nose to avoid potential injury.
“Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to Mill Pond,” Connally wrote in the Paw Press school newsletter. “A special thank you to Ms. Lipe, Ms. Edwards, Mill Pond Booster Club, and Mill Pond Staff for making the Pentathlon a great success and a fun time for all.”
