The City of Yelm’s Military Banner Program is a way to honor those who served in the United States Armed Forces.
The program, which was reintroduced after a brief hiatus, allows people to recognize their loved ones by purchasing a banner that will be displayed on light poles in the city. The banner will include the honoree’s name and the military branch they served in.
The banner, which costs $85, is open to all of those who are currently serving in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy or National Guard, as well as those who have retired or have been honorably discharged from any term of service.
The banners will be displayed until December of the year they were purchased, after which they can be picked up at Yelm City Hall.
“As a community, we have a large military demographic,” Mayor Joe DePinto said. “It’s important to honor these folks for the work they do in keeping our community, and nation, safe. We’re grateful for their service and sacrifice and are pleased to recognize them in this way.”
The program is set to start in May, in time for Armed Forces Day.
The city will work with Dirty Deeds to put up the banners on light poles along Yelm Avenue, state Route 507 and Tahoma Boulevard. The city hopes the program will grow in the future.
According to Communications and Recreation Coordinator Line Roy, the program is designed to honor those who have served.
“The banner signifies the city’s gratitude for their service and commitment to our nation and our community,” Roy said.
