Only trailing by one after the first quarter, the Tenino High School girls basketball team struggled in the second and third quarters to eventually drop a non-league game to Kalama, 49-36 on Saturday at Brock Court.

The Chinooks outscored their opponent 33-17 in the middle two stanzas. The Beavers (2-7) made just nine field goals all night and five of them were from beyond the arc.

“We had a tough night finishing around the hoop,” Tenino head coach Kirsi Gofinch said. “I think it’s a game we can learn a lot from. Proud of how the effort levels were sustained.”

Charley Jones led the Beavers with 13 points while Kylie Gonia added seven and Kyla Watson recorded six. Forty-one of Kalama’s 49 points were scored by three players.

Tenino gets a quick turnaround and faces Stevenson on Monday before taking on local foe Mossyrock next week.
