Letter to the Editor: Update on Lake Lawrence LMD renewal

Posted

Dear editor,

I’d like to share an update with Thurston County residents about the progress of the Lake Lawrence Lake Management District (LMD) renewal. On Nov. 4, 2025, the Thurston County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) approved a resolution of intent to form Lake Management District No. 26 for Lake Lawrence. On Dec. 2, 2025, they scheduled a public hearing for Jan. 20, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. to gather testimony from residents, state agencies and current LMD members on whether the district should be renewed.

Earlier this year, during May and June, Lake Lawrence LMD members overwhelmingly demonstrated their support by signing a petition requesting the renewal. That strong show of community backing led directly to the commissioners’ recent action.

The need for this renewal is critical. In 2024, Lake Lawrence experienced the most severe Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) in its recorded history, lasting more than three months.

In 2025, we have already had three documented HABs, with the most recent occurring on Oct. 21. These blooms negatively impact water quality, recreation, and overall lake health.

Renewing the LMD will allow us to continue and expand efforts to reduce and prevent algae blooms and to control invasive and nuisance aquatic vegetation that interferes with boating, swimming, and fishing.

For those interested in learning more — including reviewing the petition, the Resolution of Intent, and updates on the renewal process — please visit the Lake Lawrence LMD website at: www.lakelawrencelakemanagementdistrict.com.

Thank you for helping us keep the community informed about an issue that affects so many local residents.

Sincerely,
Barry Halverson, Yelm
