Letter to the Editor: Lake Lawrence committee petitions members to renew district

Posted

The Lake Lawrence Lake Management District Steering Committee petitioned its members to renew its 40-year-old Lake Management District (LMD) for another 35 years. The response to the petition was overwhelmingly in favor given the increasing toxic algae blooms the lake has experienced in the past five years.

The Steering Committee contracted with Herrera Inc. to conduct a cyanobacteria management plan study of the lake that began last year and will conclude in June 2026. The purpose of this study was to determine the cause of the toxic algae blooms and a course of action to mitigate and/or eliminate them. The mitigation is expensive and requires years of consistent effort. Initial results in two other local lakes, Black and Long Lakes, have shown superior results with both lakes experiencing no toxic algae blooms above state guidelines for the past four years.

The Steering Committee wants to replicate those results here at Lake Lawrence while continuing to control noxious, invasive and nuisance aquatic vegetation.

The petition to renew the LMD was forwarded to the Thurston Board of County Commissioners on July 19 and the initial public hearing on the resolution of intent to form the LMD is expected in November 2025 followed by a vote of the LMD members early next year.
