Letter to the Editor: ‘In my experience as a Yelm teacher, I have felt supported by the district office staff’

Posted

In Yelm Community Schools, there are more than 600 staff members. 336 are certified staff (excluding certified administrators). 273 certified staff members were asked to vote in favor of a vote of no confidence in Superintendent Chris Woods — 206 of that number voted. That means that 48% of the teachers voted yes in the no confidence vote.

The YEA leadership in their letter expressing “no confidence” chose to speak for the 63 teachers who were not asked to vote (because they do not financially support the YEA leadership via dues), the 67 teachers who obtained, the 300 non-certified staff members who were not asked, and the community. The YEA presidents created a narrative and painted it on behalf of the silent.

The YEA presidents (not the membership at large) hopes that the narrative they have invented will result in the dismissal or resignation of a principled, honest leader so that he can be replaced with someone they can manipulate and control. I too can create a plausible narrative and speak on behalf of the silent.

In closing, in my experience as a teacher in Yelm (and all I can truthfully report on is my own experience) I have felt supported by the district office staff of Yelm Community Schools, I have felt supported by my administration, fellow teachers and the classified staff I have the pleasure to work with, I have not felt supported by my union presidents. My team has asked for clarity on caseloads and language that impacts our classrooms and I was made to feel silly for thinking about my needs. I left a meeting, that included my union presidents, feeling my role in Yelm Community Schools is not valued. And although I am part of the membership and I pay my dues, I was told if I wanted to be represented, I needed to be present at negotiations.

For the sake of my students, and all the children that attend our schools, I hope we can come together and show them what it means to be a part of a community.
