The Rainier volleyball team felt good after two sets but couldn’t close things out Thursday, losing its Central 2B League opener at Toutle Lake 19-25, 23-25, 25-12, 25-17, 15-11 just two days after beating the Ducks in a non-league contest.

“We played really well but lost our steam after the second set, and we couldn’t seem to recover,” Rainier coach Carrie Ooms said.

Olivia Earsley had 32 digs on defense at the back, while Acacia Murphy and Anika Plowman combined for 17 blocks at the net.

On offense, Murphy and Allyson Ooms both logged 13 kills, and Brooklynn Swenson dished out 17 assists.

The Mountaineers (5-3, 0-1 C2BL) will be back on the court at home Tuesday, hosting Toledo.

“We have a long season ahead of us still,” Carrie Ooms said. “And we will continue to improve with each game.”
