This Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, the Sacajawea Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will hold a pinning ceremony to pay tribute to Vietnam veterans starting at 12:30 p.m. at the Vietnam War Memorial Wall, located at 416 Sid Snyder Ave. SW on the Washington State Capitol campus in Olympia.
The pinning ceremony is meant to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, and the pinning ceremony will include any veteran who served in any location in or around Vietnam from Nov. 1, 1955, until May 15, 1977, according to a DAR news release.
Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs to sit and umbrellas in case of rain, as the ceremony will be held around the Memorial Wall.
“The DAR members will participate in the ceremony by reading the names of veterans who are listed as killed in action (KIA) or missing in action (MIA),” the release added. “... Participating in this reverent ceremony, in addition to the organization’s other support of the armed forces, is a tangible way for DAR members to say ‘thank you’ by acknowledging and recognizing veterans' service, sacrifice and commitment to the preservation of our nation's freedom. The Sacajawea Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution is comprised of (members from) Thurston, Lewis and Mason count(ies).”
National Society Sons of the American Revolution member George Rogers Clark will provide the Color Guard for the ceremony, and Olympia Highlanders Bagpipes and Drum Corps member Bev York will perform “America the Beautiful” and “Amazing Grace.”
