City parks department seeking summer league kickball teams

As the City of Yelm’s annual mushball tournament continues to be successful each summer, the Parks and Recreation Department wants to introduce another athletic activity to residents: kickball.

Line Roy, the City of Yelm’s communications and recreation coordinator, said the league is scheduled to run from July 8 through Aug. 14. Games will be played on Mondays and Wednesdays during that time.

Each team requires 10 members and must have four men and four women. To begin scheduling games, Roy said the league needs at least five teams to register.

“Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a total newbie, everyone’s invited to join in on the fun,” City of Yelm Parks and Recreation wrote on Facebook. “Don’t miss out on the laughter, the camaraderie, and the chance to be crowned kickball champs.”

Teams must pay a $100 registration fee, with money going toward maintenance of the fields during league play, medals for winning teams and trophies for the league champions. This fee can be paid on the City’s website at www.yelmwa.gov

“I’m trying to increase the recreational offerings for adults in the community, and this is such a fun way to do it,” Roy said. “There’s no better way to have fun with your friends than a competition. This league will be super fun because you can’t not have fun at kickball.”

At the conclusion of the inaugural Yelm summer kickball season, league champions will be crowned. In addition to the trophies Roy mentioned, the championship team will also carry bragging rights into the second season.

In addition to the new summer kickball league, the fourth annual mushball tournament is slated for June 23 at Longmire Park. More information on Yelm’s annual charity tournament will come soon.
