St. Peter, Centralia Hospitals See Highest Ever Daily Death Toll from COVID-19

Providence’s two Southwest Washington hospitals reported their highest single-day death toll due to COVID-19 on Friday. Between Centralia and St. Peter hospitals, 10 individuals — all unvaccinated — died from the virus over the course of 24 hours.

“Our hearts go out to their loved ones and our caregivers who are tirelessly caring for our community through this pandemic,” the provider said in a social media post Friday morning, going on to encourage people to get vaccinated against the virus.

On Thursday, the two hospitals released an update on their COVID-19 patients. Of the 91 people hospitalized for the virus, 73 are not fully vaccinated. Of the 23 in critical care, 22 are not vaccinated. And of the 18 on ventilators, 17 are not vaccinated.

Lewis County’s hospitalization rate has declined since a peak in late August, but still sits at 37.4 per 100,000, well above the state average of 16.6. The state’s COVID-19 data dashboard shows Thurston County’s rate at 15.5 as of Friday afternoon.

Some of those 10 deaths will likely soon be added to Lewis County’s running death toll, which as of this week is at 84.
