Beavers Shut Out Fishermen for Opening Win

The Tenino boys soccer team got its season off to a winning start Friday, holding Ilwaco scoreless before getting the one goal it needed to come away with a 1-0 in its season opener.

“We created tons of chances, and some of them were really good looks,” Tenino coach Trevor Fetbrandt said. “It really felt like we were in control. It was a great first game to build momentum.”

The Beavers got the pivotal goal in the 53rd minute, when David Espinoza lofted a ball up and Max Craig got his head on it and sent it into the net.

Despite getting just the one goal, Tenino peppered the Fishermens’ net, racking up 19 shots on frame.

Ilwaco managed just four shots of its own. Keeper Brock Maurer — playing in his first soccer game ever, according to Fetbrandt — was equal to three of them, and the one that got past him was cleared off the line by David Ruedy before it could go over.

The uneven shot totals told the story of the game, with Tenino bossing possession most of the way.

“Alex Reichelderfer and David Espinoza dominated the midfield for us,” Fetbrandt said. “They really controlled the tempo of the game.”

Tenino will come back for its league opener on the Black Top next Wednesday, against Elma.
