Beavers blow out Grizzlies for first win

The Tenino football team broke its goose egg Friday night at home and looked good doing it, rolling to a 51-13 win over Hoquiam in 1A Evergreen League action for its first win of the Darren Tinnerstet era.

“It feels good,” Tinnerstet said. “We’ve had a couple close ones, and we needed that for morale. It was the first game that we put it all together. Everything clicked and we didn’t step on our own feet. It feels good to get it rolling.”

Tailback Michael Vassar hit paydirt four  times to lead the Beavers (1-5, 1-1 1A Evergreen), who jumped out to a 30-7 lead by halftime.

Quarterback Cody Strawn posted three total touchdowns, running one score in and hitting Austin Gonia and Jack Burkhardt for passing touchdowns.

Burkhardt also nabbed an interception on defense, while the Beavers recovered a pair of fumbles.

“Our defense played very well,” Tinnerstet said. “Just lights-out.”

Tenino will try to keep things going with another league matchup next Friday against Elma.

“I think this showed that when we’re healthy, we can do good things,” Tinnerstet said. “We definitely needed this.”
