American Legion Auxiliary Post to Host New Year’s Eve Party to Support Veterans

American Legion Auxiliary Post 164 will host a News Year’s Eve party on Friday, Dec. 31 to raise funds to help the organization support veterans in the community.

The Auxiliary is made up of people who are connected to the members of the Joseph Redberg Unit 164 of the American Legion in Yelm.

Billie-La Vonne Szabo, vice president of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 164, said the $20 ticket price will include a dinner of roast, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. Shrimp cocktail will also be served at the event.

The event is open to those who are 21 years of age and older. The tickets also give people access to a trivia game and karaoke.

The Auxiliary will also sell $5 raffle tickets for prizes, which include photography packages and gift certificates to local businesses.

The Auxiliary partners with the American Legion to do outreach events and service projects that benefit the veterans in the community, Szabo said.

“All of the money that is brought in for the event — all of it — goes to the Auxiliary fund to help veterans in the community and their families,” Szabo said.

She said the group is currently trying to raise funds to send a young person to “Girl State,” which is a program that teaches young women about the democratic process at the state capitol.

The fund also puts on events for the community’s veterans.

“We had Santa come out,” Szabo said of past events. “We put out a bunch of invitations on Facebook, and we were able to give out … 15 or 16 bikes to children of veterans in the community for Christmas.”

The kids each got to pick out a bike, meet Santa and tour a fire truck.

The American Legion and Auxiliary also put on an outreach event last week, where members of the organizations went to Prestige Senior Living Rosemont as well as Easthaven Villa to pass out Christmas stocking to veterans that live in those facilities.

Szabo said the party is important for the veterans of the community.

“The importance of the event is to bring in the new year safely and happily and to bring awareness to veterans issues (and) raise funds for veterans issues,” Szabo said. “(The Auxiliary’s) mission is to support our veterans and their families. We try to go out and build those relationships in the community and to find those veterans that need help. That’s our function. That’s what we love to do. We love to serve and those funds help us do those things.”

The event will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight on Friday, Dec. 31 at the Yelm American Legion Post 164, 16733 103rd Ave. S.E.
