64th Roy Pioneer Rodeo draws big crowd on Labor Day weekend

One of the richest traditions in the Nisqually Valley region, the Roy Pioneer Rodeo, returned for its 64th installment of the event on Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 1.

With clear blue skies and a hot sunshine beating down, a picturesque setting was established on Huggins Greig Road in Roy.

Northwest Pro Rodeo Association (NPRA) competitors, hungry for victory in their respective competitions, competed in front of packed stands, filled with loud and passionate rodeogoers. The total pool of prize money was a purse payout of $32,625.95.

Zachary Hanko, Oakdale, and Tyrel Holmes, Spray, each scored 75 in the bareback riding competition to earn $560.17. In the barrel racing competition, Olympia’s Teri Bangart took home the grand prize of $1,265.85 with a score of 17.3. She was followed by Yachats’ Gina Hall, who scored 17.68 to earn $1,047.60.

In the breakaway roping competition, Hermiston’s Jordan Minor and Grants Pass’s Helena DeCasas each scored 4 to each earn $1,042.75. They were followed by Buckley’s Krystal Pennington and Chehalis’ Hadley Hoffman, each scoring 4.2 to earn $751.75.

Tenino’s Brett Hale earned first place and scored 21.9 in the cow milking competition to earn $787.64, while Winnemucca’s Shane Erickson placed second with a score of 22.1 to earn $651.84.

Rio Rico’s Cooper Dewitt scored 77 to take first place in the saddle bronc riding competition, earning $727.50. He was followed by Beavercreek’s Chase Martin, who scored 76 to earn $545.63. Haydn Maley of Roseburg scored 5.7 in the steer wrestling competition to earn $787.64, while Hermiston’s BoDee Foster scored 7.5 to earn $651.84.

Zach Raley, Brush Prairie, was the Roy Rodeo’s top team roping header with a score of 5.1. He earned $959.30 for his efforts. Ellensburg’s Jack Fischer placed second and scored a 5.6 to earn $834.20. Springfield’s Justin Reno was the Roy Rodeo’s top team roping heeler, scoring a 5.1 to earn $959.33. He was followed by Myrtle Point’s BJ Campbell, who scored a 5.6 to earn $834.20.

Burns’ Zane Taylor finished in first place in the tie down roping competition and scored a 9.3 to earn $1,040.81. He was followed by Winnemucca’s Shane Erickson, who scored a 10.3 to earn $861.36.
