HS21+

25 local adults are currently earning their high school diplomas at Yelm Extension School this fall.

Yelm Community Schools has expanded its educational vision beyond the walls of K-12. Through new partnerships with South Puget Sound Community College, Yelm Timberland Library and the South Sound YMCA, 25 local adults are currently earning their high school diplomas at Yelm Extension School this fall. The class is full, and more are waiting to sign up.

“This program is life-changing for our community,” said Lisa Cadero-Smith, assistant superintendent of Yelm Community Schools.

As part of the district’s larger Graduate Yelm! initiative, YCS is forming strong regional partnerships to address a broader range of educational needs. The district’s goal is to remove every conceivable barrier to educational attainment for Yelm citizens. Through the HS21+ Program, students have access to Chromebooks; onsite YMCA childcare; and printing, wifi and electronic research tools through Yelm Timberland library. SPSCC further provides career counseling, including financial information and access to certificate and degree programs. All services are free of charge to HS21+ students.

Each student is on an individualized plan to earn their high school diploma. Previous credits, life experience, and work experience are combined to achieve this goal. SPSCC instructor, Annamary Fitzgerald, is a former Yelm graduate and a gifted teacher.

“Watching Annamary teach and connect with her students is pure magic,” said Cadero-Smith.

Fitzgerald is passionate about the critical role she plays in student lives. Yelm Community Schools are honored to work with Annamary and our Timberland and YMCA partners. Together, the partners know they are breaking new ground and building something extraordinary in Yelm.
