Yelm High School sophomore Bryce Cerkowniak, center, runs last weekend at the WIAA State 3A track meet. Cerkowniak broke the 3200-meter school record for a second time this season.

The Yelm High School track and field team placed six on the podium at the WIAA 3A State Track Meet at Mount Tahoma High School last weekend, the most coaches have seen in recent years.

“Overall, we did bring a large crew of kids, but the kids we did bring really performed ... I was really happy with the results,” said Head Coach Joel McMillan. “A lot of them performed better than where they came in at.”

Two athletes finished at Mount Tahoma with new school records. Sophomore Bryce Cerkowniak broke the boys 3,200-meter race record for a second time this season, besting it by 7 seconds with a time of 9:24.59. Senior Carissa Stovall had a superb showing at girls discus, topping her own school record by almost 1 foot with a throw of 138-00.

Many athletes also finished the season out with personal records to show. Cerkowniak (3,200 meter, 9:24.59), senior Elliot Clary (discus, 152-00), senior Chayton Miller (javelin, 167-04), Stovall (discus, 138-00), and sophomore Abigail Carlson (high jump, 5-05.00) all beat their personal bests.

Carlson’s second-place finish in the high jump wowed onlookers and thoroughly impressed her coaches. This was also her first appearance at state.

“If you would have told me at the beginning of the season that she’d be competing at state for the high jump, I’d probably say, ‘nah, no way,’” McMillan said.

Next year, McMillan said the coaches would like to utilize Carlson in more events, such as the 300-meter hurdles, which she started out on this season.

The girls 4x200-meter relay placed around the same lineup as their time going into the state tournament, although McMillan said the hope was to bring an upset to the faster teams and place in the top eight. The team ultimately found themselves running with two alternates.

The plan next year is to build off the foundation the 4x200 team has made this season.
