MOSSYROCK — The Mountaineers had the hot hand here Tuesday night and the Vikings could never quite counter, as Rainier picked up a 66-39 Central 2B League girls basketball win.

It was the first loss of the season for Mossyrock (13-1).

Faith Boesch led Rainier with 26 points on 7 of 9 shooting from long range, and Kaeley Schultz added 21 points and 10 rebounds.

“Boesch shot really well tonight,” Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft said. “She just lit it up from that three-point line.”

The Mountaineers shot 24 of 60 (60%) for the game, and outscored the Vikings 18-6 in the second quarter to lead 29-16 at halftime.

Schultz, co-MVP of the C2BL last year, then scored 11 in the third quarter to help Rainier keep its momentum.

Mossyrock, meanwhile, went 16 of 51 from the floor (31%) and was outrebounded 30-25.

“It just wasn’t our night, shooting-wise,” Moorcroft said. “And then it just trickled down from there.”

Andee Nelson and Faith Mulligan each scored eight points for Mossyrock. Nelson added a team-high seven rebounds.

“I think this is one we can learn from,” Moorcroft said, “and figure out how to bounce back and continue to get better from game to game.”

Mossyrock (3-1 league) hosts Winlock on Thursday. Rainier (12-2, 4-0 league) plays at Adna on Thursday.
