Michael Richard Walker, 71, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Yelm, Washington on Dec. 10, 2018. Mike was born to the farming family of Verne and Edna Walker in Wapato, Washington on Aug. 12, 1947 where he was raised. A loyal Cougar, Mike attended WSU and earned a bachelor’s degree in education. Here is where he met the love of his life, Susan Johnson. It was a storied marriage of 49 years. They shared every major experience together from then on and they grew even closer with time.
Mike eventually got his masters in counseling from Seattle University and was a gifted teacher who connected with countless children over his 35-year career as an educator finding success in teaching from high school math to elementary special education. In 1990 they moved to Yelm where he taught at Southworth and Prairie Elementary.
As a hobby, Mike had a passion for horses. Susan and Mike lived and breathed horses in their free time riding in competitive events their entire lives.
Mike was a loving father to his only child Richard (Lyndsay). He was beyond proud of all of his son’s accomplishments. Mike was a devoted grandparent to his two grandsons, Sebastian (7) and Saunder (4).
Mike was a special breed of person. He was an honest man who showed an extreme caring side. He was kind and had a knack for connecting with children. Mike worked hard and lived a responsible life because it was the right thing to do. He will always be in the hearts of his loved ones.
A Celebration of Life for Mike will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 19 at their home on 14925 Martinson Road SE, Yelm.
