Congressman Denny Heck, D-Washington,, released a statement Sunday, July 28, announcing his support for a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.
A member of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee, Heck’s declaration comes days after Special Counsel Robert Mueller gave testimony to committees in the U.S. House and Senate in Washington D.C.
“First, there is no question that the President encouraged, welcomed and benefited from the interference of a foreign adversary in our 2016 election,” Heck said in a statement. “Furthermore, he has both refused to fully acknowledge it occurred and even suggested he might welcome such interference again … This strikes at the very core of our democracy and democratic values. America’s elections are for Americans. Period. Support of free, fair and open elections is not negotiable.”
Heck also addressed the argument that an impeachment proceeding simply wouldn’t make it past the Republican-held Senate.
“That may be true. What is truer is that nothing less than the rule of law is at stake,” the congressman said.
Heck is the United States representative for Washington’s 10th legislative district. It encompasses Olympia, Lacey, Rainier, Yelm, Tenino, Roy and parts of south Tacoma.
