On July 12, a Thurston County resident lost $9,000 in an apparent phone scam, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
The caller claimed to be from the Social Security Administration and made reference to the Thurston County sheriff by name.
“I’m working with John Snaza,” the caller reportedly said.
The caller then claimed he was transferring the caller to a Thurston County Sheriff’s Office phone number, which appeared to be a real number used by the sheriff’s office.
The victim, believing it was a real call, then provided bank information that resulted in a loss of $9,000, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office does not receive or collect money for the Social Security Administration, the sheriff’s office warned residents.
