A man was shot and killed near the McDonald’s in Grand Mound Tuesday after a fight ensued when he was confronted by a group of people while panhandling, according to Lt. Ray Brady of the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
The identities of the suspect and victim have not been released.
“We’re in the process of interviewing him and several witnesses,” Brady said said of the suspect at about 7 p.m.
The shooting was first reported at 5:19 p.m.
“I don’t know all the details but I do know a group of individuals had come here to confront one of the panhandlers who was here,” said Brady, noting that there were two people panhandling at the location. “That altercation quickly escalated into a physical fight.”
At some point, a man within the group shot and killed one of the men who had been panhandling.
Brady said he wasn’t yet sure why the group was confronting the panhandlers.
The man who was killed was possibly from Texas, Brady said. He described the man detained for the shooting as a “middle-aged male from the Rochester area.”
