The City of Yelm will host a free 5K run, walk, bike on the Friday before Memorial Day to remember service members who have lost their lives in the line of duty. This will be the city’s first Memorial Day event.
The event will kick off with opening remarks from Congressman Denny Heck D-Washington before creating a circle of remembrance where names of fallen service members will be read.
After the tribute, participants will be assigned a name with a brief biography of someone who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country. Participants can then dedicate their 5K in honor of that service member.
The 5K is a self-paced run, walk or bike along 3 miles of the Yelm-Tenino trail. Participants will be treated to food and beverages provided by the Nisqually Indian Tribe at the Yelm Community Center.
“By setting aside a small portion of our day together, we show our gratitude and remembrance for the courage, heroism and sacrifice of the men and women who have given all,” The city said in a news release.
The 5K is set for 3 p.m. May 25 at the Yelm Community Center. To register visit http://www.wearblueruntoremember.org/events. Registration is free but participants are asked to register online to keep an accurate count for food and beverages following the tribute.
