Yelm Football

Players hit tackle pads on the 50 yard line during practice late last month in Yelm.

Yelm Community Schools will host officials from the Seattle Seahawks franchise Friday, Sept. 6, for a check presentation and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the school’s recently renovated football field, a project that was funded partially through the NFL Foundation Grassroots Program.

At 11:30 a.m., Yelm High School will hold its back to school assembly on the field and will host Seahawks’ mascot Blitz, the Seahawk Dancers and Blue Thunder as the franchise presents a check for $250,000 to the school district.

A notable player is rumored to possibly be making an appearance.

A ribbon cutting ceremony marking the opening of the new artificial turf field will then take place at 6 p.m. — an hour before the Tornados’ first home game against Skyview — to recognize community and industry partners.

According to a press release by the district and staff, the new field provides more opportunity for use and will open up access for community organizations in the future. Before, use of the field by local teams and youth sports was restricted to 30 days each year.
